Trying to find inspiration for the final look of my assignment. Here is some inspiration:
In my head, I've been associating this work with Steampunk.

Number Meaning
One:
One is often associated with being the best (I am number one)
"The Pythagoreans referred to number one as the "monad". It symbolized the creator. It was a male number. Number one represented strength." (www.mysticalnumbers.com)
Two
Three
"The spiritual meaning of number Three deals with magic, intuition, fecundity, and advantage. The number Three invokes expression, versatility, and pure joy of creativity. Three is also a time identifier as it represents Past, Present and Future." (http://www.whats-your-sign.com)
"Three was considered the number of harmony, wisdom and understanding" (www.mysticalnumbers.com)
Four
Four is an unlucky number in Chinese, due to it's similar sound to the chinese word for 'death', although this pronounciation can difer with the different dialects.
"Number four is the number of stability, order and completion of justice. Number four is the number of the earth and mankind." (www.mysticalnumbers.com)
Of these, I'm going to go with the number 4, since that is the only number I can find that has 'unlucky' connotations. Also, since I am making a skull, the 'death' association seems appropriate.

Two
"Two is the number of balance, but also the number of conflict and opposition.
Male and Female | Light and Dark | Day and Night |
Good and Bad | Life and Death | Sun and Moon |
(www.mysticalnumbers.com)
"The symbolic meaning of number Two is kindness, balance, tact, equalization, and duality" (http://www.whats-your-sign.com)"The spiritual meaning of number Three deals with magic, intuition, fecundity, and advantage. Día de los Muertos
There can be nothing more dystopic than Día de los Muertos, The day of the dead (actually, I lie. There can be plenty of things more Dystopic than colourful candy skulls, but we're going to ignore all that)
Día de los Muertos is a Mexican Holiday in celebration and honour of the dead. The skulls are decorated in bright colours, which is what I think is interesting:

Artist - Skullgrrl
Just a few images of something that another artist has done that I think is pretty neat. Artist is known as skullgrrl online.

The art seems to be dystopic, and the combination of skulls and the plush medium is an interesting combination of cute and the concept of death.

Architecture References
Reference Image Post
Just some reference images of skulls. I still have to figure out how I'm going to incorporate the teeth into my sculpture.
Horse Skull
Camel Skull
Badger Skull
Cat Skull |
Dog Skull |
Ram's skull |
This is pretty neat, it's a skull made out of melted cassette tapes and the
horns appear to be made out of the tape inside.

Dystopia
Dystopia "is the idea of a society in a repressive and controlled state, often under the guise of being Utopian" (www.wikipedia.com), although that refers more to a dystopic society than dystopia in general. Although if you leave out the part about it being a society it is still able to make sense and has a much broader application.
When looking at the concept of the 'dark' or 'dystopic', one of the first styles to come to mind is 'Gothic'. According to Thefreedictionary.com, Gothic means "of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate."
For me, there are two things that I think about when I hear the word 'Gothic"
Gargoyles are something that has come out of Gothic architecture that lends itself well to the Macarbe. They are grotesque statues meant to frighten and intimidate evil spirits, but quite often they end up frightening us as well.
When searching for dystopia I came across the term "Orbital dystopia", which, according to Wikipedia, means "horizontal displacement of orbital structures due to trauma or craniofacial developmental anomalies". The first half of that sentence led me to believe that it was something to do with planets that had been knocked out of orbit.
It's not.
Doing something with planets could be a fun concept to work with though.
Grunge is another dystopic movement. Grunge means filth or dirt (www.thefreedictionary.com), and so grunge is the idea of making somethign dirty. When utopia is often associated with clenliness, Grunge is the opposite and so dystopic.
So far, for my Dystopic assignment, I have dark, filthy planets. Actually, that is a pretty neat concept. Let's see where I can go with that.

Project 1
Wikipedia is good for a general overview of the subjects. Because I already had a fairly good knowledge of all these subjects, I didn't feel the need to research much deeper, especially since most of the further research would not be focusing on what I want (links between Utopia and the ideas above, which is personal)
Golden section images
Spider web images:
(aside from being an awesome photograph, it also shows the water on the web, which is similar to how I incorporated the beads into my sculpture)
The broken mirror idea that I incorporated into my sculpture is similar to mosaics.
This website is a good resource, as she is also reflecting (ha) on the process she used to create a work.
'Making of' Photos
(they're both the same photos, but I put the link in twice in case the link didn't work (because I haven't used Flickr before, so I don't know if it will time out)
